I work with adults who are dealing with anxiety, depression, body image issues, and other challenges such as work, relationships, and family.

Many of my clients come to therapy feeling very confused but knowing that they are not happy. They are looking for a place of peace where they can start to unpack things. Maybe that sounds like you too?

My clients often say that sessions with me help them process the issues that are causing stress and connect into a sense of calm. In addition to a sense of calm gained during sessions, clients share that they have been able to apply what they have learned in session to make their daily lives more manageable.

Therapy for young adults who need help with managing depression, anxiety or stress so they can enjoy their lives again.

I am Nicole Powell, a therapist in North Riverside, IL and I love helping people rediscover their strength

Together we will help you overcome your challenges, learn to love yourself, love your body, and improve your relationships.

What Makes Me Different

I am a therapist who will do more than “just listen.” As I am getting to know you, I will also be thinking about ways to help you get unstuck. You will start having wins for a change!

I use evidence-based treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness practices, and body-based interventions. What are evidence-based treatments? They are strategies that science has shown to ACTUALLY WORK for treating depression and anxiety.

We will also review our plan to make sure what we are doing is making a difference in your life. We can always adjust the plan if needed.

Integration of PolyVagal Therapy in my practice

I have been learning more about PolyVagal theory and I am starting to use this information with my clients. PolyVagal theory helps us better understand our nervous systems and how physical processes can affect our mood and behavior. People who have experienced previous trauma often have nervous systems that are more attuned to threat, which can make it harder for them to feel present and safe in the moment. Although we are not in direct control of our nervous systems, we can become empowered by learning more about how we experience different nervous system states. Integrating physical coping skills can help us redirect our nervous systems when they are not responding to the current moment appropriately.

By addressing your thoughts, emotional feelings, and the physical processes that contribute to depression, anxiety, and trauma, we can make progress on helping you find relief faster.

Why I became a therapist:

My natural curiosity about the human experience is part of what led me to becoming a therapist. The subject of psychology is something I have a passion for, but I have also developed my compassion through my own experiences and watching those I care for go through challenges. I enjoy seeing my clients make the progression towards healing that comes through therapy.

My professional background:

BA in Psychology from St. Mary’s University, Minnesota

MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Lewis University, Romeoville

I have also worked and volunteered in a variety of different settings, including domestic violence shelters, non-profits, and treatment programs for people suffering from Depression, Anxiety, and life challenges.
